Turn up to $1,700 of your federal tax into a Brooklyn scholarship.

Starting January 1, 2027, every dollar you give to an approved scholarship granting organization, up to $1,700 a person, comes off your federal income tax. We turn those gifts into scholarships for Brooklyn students.

Brooklyn Scholarship Fund is applying for New York’s list of approved scholarship granting organizations.

Example of a 2027 gift for the credit. Write “Section 25F” in the memo so it goes into our scholarship account.

How the credit works

The federal scholarship tax credit is new in 2027. New York announced on October 9, 2026 that it will take part, so gifts to approved New York scholarship organizations can count.

  1. Give from January 1, 2027

Send us a cash gift and mark it as a Section 25F contribution. A check, card payment or bank transfer all count.

  2. Get your receipt

By January 31 of the next year, we send you a written receipt with your donor number.

  3. Claim the credit

Report the gift on IRS Form 8525 when you file your federal return.

The rules in brief

$1,700
The most one person can claim in a year.
$3,400
The most a married couple filing jointly can claim, when each spouse gives $1,700 of their own.
5 years
How long unused credit carries forward if you owe less tax than you gave.
  • Only individuals can claim the credit, and only for cash gifts. Gifts of stock don’t qualify.
  • A gift you claim for the credit can’t also be deducted as a charitable contribution.
  • You can’t choose the student. Our scholarship committee awards every scholarship using written criteria.
  • Talk to your tax preparer about how the credit fits your own return.
